Procurement Transformation is a hot topic that constantly inspires hot debate. As a result, organisations of all shapes and sizes, procurement is looking for opportunities to rework its operations and realise greater strategic value.
Alex Jennings, Chief Procurement Officer of DS Smith recently spoke at SCOPE: Supply Chain and Procurement Summit 2021 along with his colleague Harold Hendrickx, Head of Transformation and Enablement. They both summarised procurement transformation as “fundamental change in the whole process”, rather than a minor tweak to the current ways of working.
Re-write the Rulebook
Harold noted four areas that become disrupted when re-writing the rulebook. These are:
- Affects the creation of value
- Impact on effectiveness
- Impact on efficiency
- Affects the way we manage risk
Leadership in Procurement Transformation
It is important to analyse what impact a transformation programme will have to processes, esuring there are improvements. There are easy wins during implementation, namely clearer cost management, driving innovation, managing supply base and improving risk management.
Sometimes transformation programmes can get lost. Harold notes that this is mainly due to unclear ownership and leadership over the project and no appetite for investment.
