How Smart Homes and Grid-Responsive Demand Are Key to Decarbonization

Director of the US Department of Energy’s Loan Programs Office Jigar Shah will explain how his office can help companies democratize energy efficiency, residential solar PV, home batteries, EVs, and smart appliances so that these cost-and energy-saving technologies can be made available to low-income Americans. He’ll show how, by making these technologies more accessible to all, the US will be better positioned to meet the decarbonization goals that have been set by the Biden administration.

Microgrids for Resilliency
+1
MORE

Microgrids are unique in that for the majority of their operational lives, they are part of the main grid but, since they also have their own dedicated generation source, they have the ability to “island” from the main grid and still provide power to users during an outage. University campuses, electric utilities, large C&I companies, municipalities and others are quickly discovering their benefits. In addition to resiliency, microgrids can also provide grid services during normal grid operation such as peak shaving, demand response and, once DERs are fully unlocked, other ancillary services like volt/var regulation, reactive power and frequency regulation. This session will explore the technologies behind microgrids, use cases, challenges for developing them and much more.

Making the Most of your AMI Data
+1
MORE

The installation of an Automated Meter Infrastructure (AMI) has provided great benefit for Oncor and its customers. Fully deployed since 2012, Oncor has developed many use-cases to improve safety, system reliability, and root-cause analytics. The value of AMI data has permeated the disparate arms of Oncor’s business units and sparked a change in how Oncor handles access to data and tools for analytics. AMI also provides an invaluable voice of the customer through power status events and interval data. This session will highlight several of the ways Oncor has leveraged our AMI data and how the question changed from, “What can we do with AMI data,” to, “Where would we be without AMI data?”

Unpacking Power Purchase Agreements
+2
MORE

Corporate demand for clean, renewable energy is in large part driving the U.S. energy transition. With demand outpacing supply, and large corporate energy buyers possessing significant influence, the nuances of Power Purchase Agreements can be difficult to grasp. This CONNECT session will unpack PPAs and share best practices for capital investment, financing, and regulatory navigation.

Maximizing DER Markets in a Decarbonized Grid
+1
MORE

First came net-metering, a policy / rate design that compensates residential and commercial solar PV owners via utility bill credits. Today, as we continue to decarbonize our energy system, distributed energy resources (DER) have expanded beyond solar PV to include onsite batteries and electric vehicles. If utilities or aggregators can control these DER, they can be used for grid services like demand response, peak reduction and other ancillary services. But the DER marketplace still needs to be developed. How do you compensate a battery owner for use of their battery? What about EVs that provide vehicle-to-grid services? This closing keynote session examines the future of DER markets, and offers a glimpse of results from pilot projects being conducted worldwide.

Interconnecting Renewable Sources to the Grid
+3
MORE

As demand for renewable energy by consumers, corporations, and utilities continues to surge, it’s crucial that projects are quickly connected to the grid to meet ambitious climate targets. Many renewable energy asset owners have found, however, that the process can be slow and challenging, from the planning stage to commissioning. This CONNECT session will explore best practices and tools for timely and efficient interconnection of renewable energy assets to the grid.
