The Federal Reserve Bank of New York recently introduced their Global Supply Chain Pressure Index (GSCPI) as a way of quantifying supply chain pressures. This presentation describes an alternative measurement approach developed using publicly available data from the Census Bureau’s Quarterly Survey of Plant Capacity Utilization. This alternative measurement strategy suggests, contra the New York Fed, that supply chain pressures continued to rise through the fourth quarter of 2021. I then demonstrate how to quantify the impact of supply disruptions on motor vehicle assembly in the USA using various government sources.
