Learning Objectives

Innovating manufacturing processes has been foundational to numerous new products and technologies. Several examples of this will be shown and the case is made that new technologies will not just enable new information networks, as envisioned by Industry 4.0, but entirely new kinds of processes can be enabled. Examples will be shown in areas of impulse and metamorphic manufacturing. This is used to make a broader point that smart companies can adopt a mindful strategy to profit from purposeful process innovation.

Key Takeaways:

  • Innovative manufacturing processes are tools with remarkable competitive leverage

  • This is a remarkable time for process innovation because of many technologies that can be synthesized

  • An effective innovation strategy does not need to be expensive, but does require diligence
